How to  Tails Dubbing Palmering Ribbing Wings Tying Flies

PALMERING

The process of winding a feather down the hook.

Select a feather from the cape to suit the size of fly you are tying.
Some flies use a palmered feather. The technique is connected to the ribbing process.Tie your tail, catch in a rib (gold wire here) and then dub a body.
Having dubbed the body catch in the stalk of a cock hackle with a couple of turns of thread.
Having firmly tied the hackle stalk down simply trim away the waste material with your scissors.
Using your hackle pliers grasp the top of the hackle ready for winding down the body of the fly.
Begin with two turns on the same point of the hook and then make even turns in a clockwise direction down towards the tail.
Having reached the point where the rib is tied in, make clockwise turns of the gold wire in the opposite direction (back up towards the eye) until you next meet the thread.

Tie the rib down and trim off the excess.

There you have it, a perfectly palmered and ribbed body, giving both movement and flash to the fly.
